Springtime in the nation's capital is a gorgeous time of year, with mild temperatures perfect for enjoying the outdoors. The most notable event of the season is the annual bloom of thousands of cherry trees lining the Tidal Basin near the Jefferson Memorial, surrounding the picturesque sites in a sea of pink and white.
While the dates of the blooms vary year-to-year, the National Park Service horticulturists forecast when visitors can anticipate seeing the cherry trees in bloom. They usually make their predictions in early March. The average date for peak cherry blossoms in D.C. is April 4, which is when 70% of the blooms are open.
Capital Hilton is located 1.5 miles to the cherry blossoms around the Tidal Basin. Guests can walk two blocks from the hotel to the McPherson Metro Station and take the orange, blue or silver line two stops to the Smithsonian Metro Station, the closest stop to the Tidal Basin. From there, it's about a 10 minute walk to the cherry blossoms. During peak bloom dates, Metro is heavily used, and walking is another great option. From Capital Hilton's front doors, a scenic stroll past the White House, Washington Monument and National Mall will get you down to the Tidal Basin in about 30 minutes.
Visitors also enjoy the National Cherry Blossom Festival, which is centered around four weekends of events and activities, including boat tours and bike rides to photo safaris and art exhibits. The 2018 Cherry Blossom Festival is March 20 - April 15.
