This compact city has a lot to offer, from beautiful cityscapes featuring Neo-classic architecture, to numerous museums housing exhibits of Bulgaria's rich history. The picturesque Vitosha Mountain framing Sofia, and local parks bring nature and outdoor exploration to this quaint city.
Jump into a car, taxi, or any form of public transportation and head over to Vitosha Mountain. Enjoy superb water-skiing, day hikes, picnics, or just a walk through the majestic foliage. This popular destination has a good network of lifts, trails, ski slopes and mountain huts. Vitosha is known for its boulder-covered slopes, called 'stone rivers', and Zlatnite Mostove (Golden Bridges) is the best place to check them out. Although the trails are very popular, you need only take one step off the beaten path and you will feel like you have the place all to yourself. Plan to spend at least half a day hiking.
Located in the Vitosha Mountain, is the beautiful and vast Boyana Waterfall. The only sound that may interrupt the unique silence and serenity of this breathtaking scenery is that of splashing waters, falling gracefully from 15 meters. On a clear sunny day you can spot the waterfall from the capital's centrum. The waterfall is most rampant in the spring when the snows are thawing, you can even see the water mists from Sofia.
A beautiful and popular destination in Sofia is South Park. With numerous bicycle and walking paths, local attractions and playgrounds, you will enjoy an active day in this park. Excellently located, the park borders the Park Center shopping mall and Hilton Sofia, while its main entrance is at the popular shopping avenue - Vitosha Boulevard. South Park is a favorite for sporting events and kid's activities throughout the year.
Bulgarian cuisine is a great fusion of Balkan, Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisines. What makes Bulgarian food unique is the balance between meat, yogurt, cheese and vegetables which blend perfectly in the Bulgarian climate, along with dried herbs to flavor Bulgarian dishes. While yogurt and white cheese are the most recognized and famous Bulgarian products around the world, other meals such as 'banitza' (puff pastry), 'cheverme' (grilling an entire lamb above slow fire), 'bob chorba' (bean soup), 'tartator' (cold cucumber soup) and Shopska salad, also deserve attention. Make sure to ask our Hilton Sofia Concierge team for recommendations of customary Bulgarian restaurants, and try the Shopska salad at the Seasons Restaurant or Artists Bar.
Housed in a former mosque built-in 1496, this museum displays a wealth of Thracian, Roman and medieval artefacts. Highlights include a mosaic floor from the Church of Sveta Sofia, a 4th-century B.C. Thracian gold burial mask and a magnificent bronze head thought to represent a Thracian king.
This remarkable, partly covered excavation site, sits just above the Serdica metro station. Unearthed from 2010 to 2012 during construction of the metro, the site displays the remains of the Roman city Serdica that once occupied the area. There are fragments of eight streets, an early Christian basilica, baths and houses dating from the 4th to 6th centuries.
