Weekend Guide

Plan the perfect weekend at the Hilton Lake Taupo hotel, a short drive to the charming Taupo town center and with impressive views across Lake Taupo and Tongariro National Park.

  • Taupo airport is approximately 6km from Hilton Lake Taupo. A taxi ride will cost about $20. Hilton Lake Taupo is situated on Napier Road, elevated above Lake Taupo with sweeping views of the lake and mountains beyond. After you check-in, visit Bistro Lago for a delicious buffet breakfast to kick-start your day.
  • After breakfast, take a short walk from the hotel down to the lakes edge and enjoy a stroll along Taupo's iconic 'Lions Walk'. This picturesque walk along the lakes edge travels from Taupo town centre to 5 Mile Bay which lasts approximately 10km. Why not hire one of the Hotel's bikes to get you along a little quicker? Along the way, visit the Taupo boat harbour to watch many cruising and trout fishing vessels coming and going.
  • Visit the riverside markets held every Saturday until 1pm. You will travel along Lake Terrace which is a popular swimming spot in the summer and the 2 Mile Bay sailing centre is a great stop for a refreshing beverage. For lunch, Taupo has numerous cafes and restaurants so make sure you visit the town centre to refuel before your next adventure.

  • Visit the majestic Orakei Korako thermal wonderland. Known as "The hidden valley”, this spectacular geothermal area showcases why the Central North Island is so famous for its thermal activity, geysers and boiling mud! Entry includes your self-guided walk around the valley as well as a return ferry trip.
  • After a rather energetic morning walking or biking some of Taupo's hot spots, visit Spa Park for a relaxing soak in the natural mineral water which flows into the Waikato River. Bathing pools have been excavated over time and one can enjoy this natural wonder free of charge.
  • Visit Taupo bungy and observe as thrill seekers take the leap and enjoy one of New Zealand’s most iconic activities - who knows? You might pluck up the courage to do it yourself!

  • Enjoy a scenic lake cruise at sunset with Barbary cruises. This stunning cruise will visit the famous Maori rock carvings as well as showcase Taupo's greatest asset - Our Lake.
  • Enjoy dinner at Bistro Lago, Hilton Lake Taupo's award winning restaurant, regarded as one of Taupo's finest.
  • Finish your day enjoying the hotel facilities. Take a swim in the thermally heated pool or have a spa followed by a relaxing sauna or even some time in our steam room.

  • Start your day with yet another delicious breakfast in Bistro Lago, or perhaps try out the In Room Dining Menu to enjoy breakfast on your terrace. If you’re an early riser, perhaps a visit to the hotel gym prior to breakfast could be a good way to work off some calories from last night's dinner.
  • A short drive or taxi ride from the hotel is the majestic Huka Falls, regarded as the most iconic visitor attraction of Taupo. Free to view and with various look out points, get a great vantage of New Zealand's largest water fall (by volume) and some excellent photo opportunities.

  • Make your way to the Lava Glass Gallery and Sculpture Garden for a great opportunity to see glass blowing first hand and a chance to purchase some artwork as a gift or souvenir. The onsite café is a good place to stop for a light lunch and a walk around their sculpture garden is a must-do activity whilst in Taupo.
  • Be sure to visit the Aratiatia Rapids at 2pm to see the amazing sight as the dam opens its gates. The dry river bed will once again become a gushing river, replicating the drama of the Huka Falls. There is a short bush walk which takes you to the lookout and enables you to get a better vantage point of the rapids as they occur.
  • Stop off at Taupo Museum for an insight into Taupo’s unique history. Visit the redoubt next to the Museum to see firsthand where the Armed Constabulary fought the local tribes in many of Taupo's bloody wars during the 19th century.

  • A visit to Taupo's beautiful Botanical Gardens is a good option from late winter through until early autumn. Free to visit and some amazing colourful displays on show.
  • Returning back to the hotel, a visit to another icon of Taupo, "DeBretts Spa Resort" would be a good way to wind down after a busy weekend. Located right next door to the hotel, public and private mineral bathing pools are what they are famous for. Also located onsite is Living Water Spa which is perfect for someone looking for ultimate relaxation.
  • Feeling Rejuvenated? Complete the weekend at one of Taupo’s top dining spots; the award winning Plateau Restaurant and Bar. Plateau serves fine craft beers and kiwi inspired food, showcasing the best of New Zealand cuisine.
