The Duniway Portland, a Hilton Hotel

545 SW Taylor, Portland, Oregon, 97204, USA TEL: +1-503-553-7000 FAX: +1-503-412-1801

Our Story

Our boutique hotel epitomizes the bold and independent spirit of our namesake, Abigail Scott Duniway, an American pioneer in the 19th and 20th centuries. The owner of the first free press in Oregon, Abigail was also an author and a suffragist who devoted more than forty years to seeking and successfully getting the right to vote for women in Oregon and promoting free speech and human rights. Her independent spirit lives on today in the Duniway, our employees and the experiences we treat visitors to.

Celebrating the Unique

As the Duniway celebrates independent personalities, it also embraces the quirkiness and uniqueness of Portland. Perhaps the most visible way is through our embracing of body art in various design elements throughout the hotel. From guest room keys that feature a tattoo artist-illustrated rose (to honor Portland's designation as the "City of Roses") to the thought-provoking photography in the elevator banks on guest floors showing off beautiful, empowered, tattooed women by Kevin Barry Fine Art Associates, we like to think a modern-day Abigail Scott Duniway would feel right at home here.

Stone Cutter

Visitors to the Duniway will notice our unique stone cutter logo throughout the hotel, including on the uniforms our staff wear. The stone cutter logo is made up of three parts that assembled together tell the distinctive story of the Duniway.

  • The westward-pointing arrow is a nod to the travelers who risked it all on the Oregon Trail as they set out for a new life in the west
  • The feathered quill represents Abigail Scott Duniway's life as a writer and scribe and is countered by the rose that symbolizes Portland's nickname as the Rose City
  • Each of these elements are anchored by a rattlesnake characterizing rebirth and a creative life force that is prevalent throughout the Duniway
