The Colorful Past of our Milwaukee City Center Hotel
Since 1928, our historic hotel has maintained a stately presence in downtown Milwaukee, providing dedicated service to travelers from near and far. The building, designed by Holabird and Rochce in the neoclassic Art Deco style, was Wisconsin's tallest hotel at 265 feet.
The hotel's opening coincided with Prohibition, and the infamous Al Capone lived in the city at that time.
The Schroeder Hotel
Walter Schroeder, a charitable man who went to school through the eighth grade, bought the building in 1927 for $7 million. He had worked as an Office of Milwaukee Register of Deeds clerk, where he became real estate-savvy. Schroeder was a gracious host of dinner parties at this Milwaukee hotel.
Marc Plaza
Ben and Steve Marcus purchased the Schroeder Hotel in 1972 and renamed it Marc Plaza. The two invested in the property with an $8 million renovation.

Back to Its Roots
In 1994, the hotel was restored to its original 1920s' splendor.

A Modern Name
Marcus Corp. in 1995 bought the hotel, called it Hilton Milwaukee City Center, and added rooms, restaurants, a skywalk and parking.

The Legend Lives
Today, the gracious style of our historic Milwaukee hotel is reflected in luxurious guest rooms, and two regal ballrooms.
